Ubiquitous: Meaning, Context, Examples and Quiz

· sasmita das · 2 min read

Ubiquitous (adjective) — Ubiquitous describes something found everywhere, or seemingly everywhere, in the setting being discussed. It emphasises how widely something is encountered.

Pay attention to the setting

“Umbrellas were ubiquitous at the rainy festival” describes that event, not every place on Earth. Writers often use ubiquitous for a strong impression of widespread presence rather than a literal claim about every possible location.

Common and ubiquitous overlap, but ubiquitous is stronger. A common item may occur frequently; a ubiquitous item seems to be encountered almost wherever you look within the relevant setting.
