Recalcitrant in Context: Usage, Sentences and Quiz
Recalcitrant (adjective) — Recalcitrant means stubbornly unwilling to obey or cooperate. Writers often use this formal adjective when describing a difficult refusal to accept direction.
Show the resistance in the sentence
Give readers enough detail to understand the label. “The recalcitrant group refused every proposed timetable” is clearer than simply announcing that a group was difficult.
Distinguish recalcitrant from independent. An independent person may think for themselves and still cooperate. Recalcitrant emphasises obstinate resistance, usually from the speaker’s critical perspective.
