Synonyms have the same or a similar meaning in a particular use. Antonyms express an opposite meaning. Context matters: a word can have several senses, and a correct choice must match the sense used in the sentence.

The rules and clues to remember
Similarity is not identity in every sentence
Two words may be close in one context but not interchangeable in all expressions. A bright lamp and a bright pupil use different senses of bright.
LightA bright lamp gives plenty of light.
AbilityA bright pupil learns quickly.
Remember: Find the sense before recalling a memorised pair.
Related is not the same as opposite
A word from the same subject area may fail to reverse the meaning. For example, a delay is connected with a journey, but it is not the opposite of a vehicle.
Opposite in contextAn abundant supply contrasts with a scarce supply.
Remember: An antonym must reverse the relevant meaning, not merely suggest a different topic.
Watch how strong the meaning is
Slight uncertainty and complete disbelief are different. Choose the option closest to the strength expressed in the sentence.
MeaningA reluctant helper is unwilling or hesitant, rather than unable to help.
Remember: Do not turn a moderate statement into an absolute one.

Two worked examples
Example 1
Closest meaning of brief in “The chairperson gave a brief introduction”: short / angry / hidden / noisy.
Answershort
Brief concerns the introduction’s length. Angry describes emotion, hidden describes visibility, and noisy describes sound. None of those expresses short duration.
Example 2
Opposite of expand in “They plan to expand the storage area”: enlarge / reduce / describe / repair.
Answerreduce
Expand means make larger here; reduce reverses that direction. Enlarge is similar to expand. Describe and repair concern different actions.

Question 1 · Synonym
Closest meaning of reluctant: “Arun was reluctant to sign before reading the terms.”
A.Unwilling
B.Unable
C.Delighted
D.Careless
Show answer and explanations for question 1
Answer A: Unwilling
Correct. Unwilling matches his hesitation about signing.
Not correct. Unable means lacking the ability or opportunity; the sentence describes willingness.
Not correct. Delighted means very pleased, which does not match his hesitation.
Not correct. Careless means inattentive; wanting to read the terms suggests care instead.
Record each target word with the sentence and the sense used.
For a synonym, write a fresh sentence where both words fit naturally.
For an antonym, explain which aspect of meaning is reversed.
Keep a simple note: question number → your reason → the correct rule or evidence → one new example. A mistake is useful when you can explain the correction.
