Three common meanings of profound
- Deep in thought or understanding: “The discussion led to a profound insight about trust.”
- Intensely felt: “He expressed profound gratitude to the volunteers.”
- Very significant: “The new railway brought profound changes to the town.”
In these examples, the word concerns an insight, a feeling and the extent of a change. It is not limited to positive experiences: profound grief and profound disagreement are also possible.
What does profound impact mean?
A profound impact is a deep or significant effect. The phrase says more than “some effect.” Explain what changed so the reader understands why the impact matters.
Compare “The course had a profound impact” with “The course had a profound impact on her confidence: she began speaking at meetings.” The second sentence supplies a concrete result.

Profound and profoundly
Profound is the adjective: “a profound difference.” Profoundly is the adverb: “The two designs are profoundly different.” It can also describe an action or experience: “The story affected me profoundly.”
Other related nouns include profundity and profoundness, though a simpler phrase such as “depth of understanding” may be easier to read.
Profound versus deep
Deep has many ordinary uses, including physical depth. Profound can also refer to physical depth, but everyday learner examples often concern ideas, feelings or significance. “A deep swimming pool” is the natural everyday description.
Possible alternatives include insightful, intense and far-reaching, depending on the sense. Contrasts include superficial and slight. The word traces through French to Latin profundus, associated with depth.
