Everyday English · Travel & getting around

Get back

Return to a place.

You return to a place after being somewhere else. It often answers the question “When will you be home again?”

Plain-English lessonVisual explanation3 practice steps

01 · Picture the situation

Understand it in three steps

Cartoon of a woman returning home with a travel bag and receiving a warm welcome.
Picture the meaningShe gets back home after her trip.
01Leave a place
02Spend time away
03Return

Imagine this: You leave home in the morning, visit a friend and return at five. You get back home at five.

02 · Hear it in everyday life

Examples you can use

Three natural sentences

  1. What time will you get back?
  2. We got back from the airport after midnight.
  3. I need to get back to the office.

A short conversation

PERSON AWill you be out all day?
PERSON BNo, I should get back before dinner.

Read the conversation aloud. Then swap roles and try it again without looking.

03 · Build your sentence

How to use get back

Use get back to + most places: get back to the office. With home, here and there, normally leave out to: get back home / get back here.

BASE FORMget back
PAST SIMPLEgot back
AFTER HAVE / HASgot back (UK) / gotten back (US)

The base form is used after can, will and to. The past simple describes a finished past event. The third form follows have or has, for example when connecting an earlier action to now.

A common mistake to avoid

Use thisWe got back home at eight.
Avoid this in this meaningWe got back to home at eight.

Home does not normally need to in this movement pattern.

Do not confuse it: Set off describes leaving to start a journey. Get back describes returning. Going somewhere again is not always a return to your starting point, so use the context.

Does it have another meaning?

Get something back means recover it: “I got my book back.” Get back to someone can mean reply later. Those patterns have different meanings.

Learn the meaning and sentence pattern together. Small words such as up and off do not have one fixed meaning in every expression.

04 · Make it stick
