What does “a blessing in disguise” mean?

A blessing in disguise is an event that seems unfortunate at first but later brings a benefit. The good result is not obvious at the beginning, which is why it is described as being in disguise.

For example, a cancelled lesson might initially disappoint you. If the extra time lets you finish an important application, you might later describe the cancellation as a blessing in disguise. The expression connects the initial problem with the later benefit.

A blessing in disguise in sentences

  • The postponed interview was a blessing in disguise because it gave me more time to prepare.
  • Our first design being rejected turned out to be a blessing in disguise: the revision worked much better.
  • Missing that bus was a blessing in disguise; I met an old friend while waiting for the next one.
  • What seemed like an inconvenient change became a blessing in disguise.

These are invented examples. The phrase describes a positive outcome in a particular situation; it does not promise that every setback will eventually be beneficial.

Common patterns and plural form

Useful patterns include was a blessing in disguise, turned out to be a blessing in disguise and proved to be a blessing in disguise.

For several separate events, use blessings in disguise: “Both delays turned out to be blessings in disguise.” Keep in disguise unchanged. Use the noun blessing, not the verb bless, in this idiom.

What does in disguise mean here?

Literally, in disguise describes someone whose appearance hides their identity. In this idiom, the benefit is figuratively hidden by the event’s disappointing first appearance. No costume or deliberate deception is required.

You can use the expression in ordinary conversation without making a religious statement. Its main purpose here is to describe a benefit recognised afterwards.

A short conversation

A: Were you disappointed when the outdoor event was cancelled?
B: At first, yes. But moving it indoors helped everyone hear the speakers.
A: So the change turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Use the phrase thoughtfully when someone is upset. It is often more natural to describe your own experience after seeing a benefit than to tell another person immediately that their difficulty is good for them.
