Asking About a Community Class
Check whether a class suits your experience, ask about its schedule and find out how to join.
Your speaking goal
Ask about a class’s starting level, times, materials and joining process before deciding.
Before you start: Choose an imaginary class, such as drawing or photography. Think of two details you need to check.
Your six-step practice plan
- Understand: Read the goal and check the useful phrases.
- Listen or read: Follow both roles. Audio is optional.
- Repeat: Say one short line at a time, then join the words smoothly.
- Change details: Replace two details with imaginary ones.
- Role-play: Read the other person’s question, cover your reply and answer aloud. Then swap roles.
- Review: Use the “I can” checks below. Repeat any part that still needs help.
Work at your own pace. A clear message matters more than copying a particular accent.

Roles: Learner and Course organiser
Browser-generated English voice; availability and sound vary by device. Use the written dialogue if audio is unavailable.
Learner: Hello. I’m interested in the beginners’ drawing class.
Organiser: Of course. What would you like to know?
Learner: Do I need any experience?
Organiser: No. This class is for people who are new to drawing.
Learner: What day is it on?
Organiser: Tuesday evenings, from six to seven thirty, for six weeks.
Learner: Do I need to bring any materials?
Organiser: For this course, paper and pencils are provided.
Learner: How much does the course cost?
Organiser: Thirty pounds for all six sessions.
Learner: Thank you. How do I sign up?
Organiser: Complete the form at the front desk. We’ll confirm whether a place is available.
Useful phrases and what they do
- I’m interested in ___. — Introduce something you want to learn more about.
- Do I need any experience? — Check whether previous knowledge is required.
- Are materials provided? — Ask whether the course supplies the items you need.
- How do I sign up? — Ask how to register or join.
Say it clearly
Practise the schedule in groups: ‘Tuesday evenings / from six to seven thirty / for six weeks.’ Separate the session time from the course length so the listener can follow both.
Build your own replies
I’m interested in ___. Do I need ___? → No, this course is suitable for beginners.
Ask and check
Is that thirty pounds per session or for the whole course? → For all six sessions.
Common mistakes and alternatives
Say ‘interested in drawing’, rather than ‘interested on drawing’. ‘Sign up for a class’ and ‘register for a class’ are both natural. This course, price and availability process are fictional examples.
Check what you understood
Answer aloud before revealing each explanation. Natural replies with the same meaning also count.
Question 1
Does this drawing class require previous experience?
Show answer 1 and explanation
No. The organiser says it is for people who are new to drawing.
Question 2
How long is each session?
Show answer 2 and explanation
An hour and a half: six to seven thirty in the evening. Six weeks is the length of the whole course, not one session.
Question 3
Does completing the form guarantee a place in this example?
Show answer 3 and explanation
No. The organiser still needs to confirm availability. You could ask ‘When will I know whether I have a place?’
Your turn: make it a real exchange
Practise alone: read the other person’s line, cover your reply and answer aloud. Then swap roles. No partner is needed.
Role A
Ask about experience, the schedule, materials and cost for a fictional class. Check how to join.
Role B
Explain who the class is for and give clear fictional details. Explain whether a place is confirmed.
Make it easier: Keep the model visible and change one detail at a time.
Add a challenge: You cannot attend on Tuesdays. Ask whether there is a class on another day before deciding.
Ready to move on?
Try again with less reading. Use these checks and repeat any part that needs more practice.
- I can ask whether a class suits my experience.
- I can distinguish the session time from the course length.
- I can ask how to join and check availability.
