Jocular: Meaning, Examples and Quiz

· English Skill Studio · 2 min read

Jocular (adjective) — Jocular means joking or playful in manner. It can describe a person who enjoys jokes, or a remark intended humorously.

Jocular describes the tone, not everyone’s reaction

A jocular greeting can help people relax. But a joke can also be poorly timed: calling a comment jocular does not mean that everyone enjoyed it. Consider the situation and the listener’s response.

Compare “a jocular reply” with “an angry reply”. Jocular is about humour; irate means very angry. The two words are not synonyms.
